whenever we’re very busy or very lazy (read: all the time) we make a big batch of mixed legumes and spices. we use it in everything for the week, and these are two of our favorite ways - a burger (or sandwich spread, if you’re not feeling a stove right now) and in a salad.

to make this week’s mixture, pulse in a food processor until chunky, consistently mixed, and thick enough to stick together:

5-6 cups cooked lentils - put everything in the food processor when these are still hot, it makes it easier to pulse

1 cup toasted chopped cashews (just chop them and heat them up on a pan for a couple of minutes)

1-2 cups ground oats (use a coffee grinder or food processor to grind them beforehand, or buy pre-ground oats)

2 tbsp ground flax seeds

a splash or two sriracha sauce

3 tbsp (or to taste) chana masala powder (you can find it in the international aisle or in indian specialty stores if you don’t want to make it yourself)

1 tbsp sea salt, peppercorns to taste

1-2 tsp cayenne if you’re feeling dangerous

1/4 cup-1/3 cup oil, poured in slowly - don’t add too much, it’s just there to help bind the mixture while adding moisture.

water, poured in slowly - there to add moisture and to keep the blade going

if it’s not mixing at all, add in water or oil. if it’s not sticking together, add in more oats. if it’s not flavorful enough, add more spices :p

put it in a sealable container in the fridge for up to a week. make up your own mixture with your own favorite beans and spices. use it in every meal you can think of!

reminder: you have FIVE days left to submit your recipes, art, photography, writing, and vegan goods/shops to chickpea magazine. let’s see what you’ve got!

Whuffie Meter: Curious about the future of social networking? Whuffie is a conceptual social Metric based on what others think of you. In the future this Metric might actually be usable as real money. Why not? Celebrities are used to getting things for free based on their popularity. This is the same idea taken to its democratic extreme. Socializing will take on completely new dimensions when we can see everything public about a person right as we are talking with them. Think dating is difficult today? Imagine the hoops we’ll have to jump through when everyone in the bar can see your complete dating history the minute you walk into the room. The term “whuffie,” by the way, is a word coined by author Cory Doctorow in his book Down And Out In the Magic Kingdom. It refers to the measurement of respect or karma a person gains or looses in their lives. In Doctorow’s future, humans have implants in their brains that visually project their whuffie, which has replaced money as currency.

INTERVIEW : HUMBERTO LEON AND CAROL LIM OF OPENING CEREMONY

As we mentioned, and you probably already know, Opening Ceremony at Ace Hotel New York (who just had a nice article in the New York Times yesterday) will be staging a French flea market with their friends, collaborators, and favorite designers in the lobby during Fashion’s Night Out, September 10th. We were able to have a quick chat with Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, currently hailing from Tokyo (and pictured above in Ace-exclusive berets), about the open air market to end all open air markets (except it’s in our lobby).

Hi, Carol and Humberto. We’re excited about OC’s French flea market at Ace New York. Ace and Opening Ceremony have some things in common, among them our love of collaboration. This seems like the perfect showcase for all the fun work you do with friends. What inspired you?

Because this year’s country collaboration at Opening Ceremony is USA v. France, we wanted to incorporate a French theme in our Fashion’s Night Out concept. What better way to feature our French collaborations and designers than at a flea market, styled after the famous Parisian market Les Puces de Saint-Ouen? At a traditional bazaar, you can find a miscellany of interesting and often one-of-a-kind items at great bargains. We want to offer the same to those attending our Fashion’s Night Out event.

What are some of the things you’re most excited to see?

Our flea market will feature some of the most creative individuals in the fashion industry, so we’re looking forward to see how they decorate their booths. Several designers will also be offering one-of-a-kind items for sale, whether runway pieces that are not in production or vintage pieces from their archives, so we’re very excited to see what will be offered.

Are you volunteering to man any booths?

You’ll find us working at one booth or another throughout the night — and you’ll definitely see us at Opening Ceremony’s own booth!

Will you be wearing berets?

We may. Regardless, you can be sure we will take advantage of this year’s French theme. C’est la mode!

Brett Weston, or rather his estate, is selling work at Costco. A 16 x 20 print, for instance, is $5.99 but there are other sizes too. All done via the web and picked up at your local store. The two largest sizes are done via Epson in store (archival and fine quality) and the rest are on photo paper in store.

Probably the cheapest way to get an original print by any important 20th Century photographer.

They also bought rights to other photos and a lot of art like paintings.

But basically, the Westons are Westons for sale at Costco.

I’ve heard endless buzz about how “women are starting to dominate comedy.” People regarded the movie “Bridesmaids” as one of the first rom-coms where women get a little gross and “shock us” with their ability to be more funny than demure. Then when this fall’s TV lineup was announced, every…
